What did your grandparents do (not necessarily in the war)?
My mum's dad was a cunt, had 11 kids (2 died) and despite earning decent dosh, spent it all on gambling.

My nan had to take in laundry to pay the rent.

My nan was a battered housewife who after the war, when the kids had grown up, left him and got a flat and adopted a war orphan (after bringing up 9 of her own).

My Dad'd mum died when she was only 32.

My Dad's dad did everything - served in the RAMC in the war, helped liberating the concentration camps and interviewing the survivors. Bought an ex german MTB after the war, ripped the engines out and built a house on it. Worked at the Royal College of Pathology among many other things.

You cunts?

Dad's side - Cabbie (grandpa) Charity administrator (step-grandma)

Mum's side - They ran the fish n chip shop on the corner of Prince Regent's Lane and Burley Road.

Both grandfathers served in the war. Alf, the chip shop owner, was involved in the liberation of Belsen. As a Jewish soldier with a patchy grasp of Yiddish he was assigned to communicate with the inmates.

Dad's mum - hard working, salt of the earth South Wales girl from Port Talbot.

Mum's mum - daughter of German immigrant dad and working-class English mum from Hackney. Did really interesting stuff as a young woman, very adventurous. I know little of them as were all dead before we went to Australia when I was 6. We hung on before going for a couple of years while my Mum's mum was still alive.
Only know that my Mum's Dad was a rag and bone man .... in Primrose Hill. Kept his horse under the Engineer pub.
And my Dad's dad was the Scottish u21 100 mile cycling champion.

Your Grandma that just passed was the one you mentioned the other day?
Either way sorry to hear pal. I hope you aren't too upset you weren't there. You'll always have the good memories, and it doesn't seem she was the type to hold it against you.

Re: What di your grandparents do (not necessarily in the war)?
My Mum's Dad was a long distance lorry driver for most of his life. Served in the Navy during WWII. Even in retirement he took up jobs to keep himself busy as he could never sit still, either gardening or later in life was actually a Chauffeur for a rich old widow.
Mum's Mum was a lovely lady who sadly I remember next to nothing of as she passed away when I was barely three years old. Had 5 children, one of whom died very young from pneumonia. I know she was a seamstress but whether she did that as a job at any time I don't know, being a Mother was her vocation.

My Dad's Dad was lovely to his Grandchildren but a right git to his own kids, so I'm told. Ran an electrical repair show in Leytonstone when I was a kid, I always remember him looking like Arkwright with his white hair and brown coat.

My Dad's Mum work in a factory I think when she was young. Had 6 Children, 2 of whom died in a house fire which she had to be pulled out of when she ran in to try to rescue her kids. I don't think she ever got over that, as a parent I'm sure you never do.
